Classroom rules:
- Respect your other classmates and the teacher.
- Be in your seat by the time the bell rings, beginning the opening activity.
- Listen for directions.
- Be prepared to learn! You must be active in your own education to succeed.
- Participate and speak when it is your turn.
Classroom procedures:
- Tardies
- Quietly pick up your handouts, turn in your work, and go directly to your seat when you come in. This will keep the class from getting distracted!
- At the end of class, hand me a "tardy slip".
- 3 tardies and we will have a chat to see what's up. I will see what I can do to help you make it to class on time.
- 5 tardies and there will be a call/email home regarding a good time to meet with your parents/guardians to discuss what we can do to help you be present on time :)
- Arrival
- On your way in, stop by the resource table and turn in anything due. You should also pick up an handouts for the day, or any absent work that you missed. Then, go to your seat and begin the opening activity.
- Absence
- When you are absent, pick up your work from the absent work file bin.
- You will be given however many days you were absent to make up the work.
- For example, if you are absent on Monday, and you return on Tuesday, you will have one day to complete the work. That means your work will be due on Wednesday.
- If the assignment is longer, the appropriate amount of days will be added on for you to complete the assignment.
- For example, if the assignment is given Monday and due Thursday, and you return on Tuesday, you will be given until Friday to complete the assignment.
- If an assignment was given before you missed a class day, you will still be required to turn in the assignment on-time or on the day of your return.
- Homework
- Put all homework due that day into the appropriate hour hand-in homework bin.
- Late homework will be docked by 10% for every day it is late. This includes papers and portfolios.
- If you are absent when the work is due, you will not be docked the point. You will begin being docked the days after your absent work is due.
Positive reinforcement and rewards:
One positive reinforcement/reward system that I use in my class is a token economy. In order to promote discussion and engagement without putting students grades on the line, I offer students up to five extra credit points a semester depending on how much they contribute to the class. Here is a chart that matches up how often a student participates to how many points they will receive at the end of the semester:
5 times = 1 point
10 times = 2 points
15 times = 3 points
20 times = 4 points
25+ times = 5 points
25 may seems like a lot, but there are about 90 days in a semester. If a student speaks a little more than 1/4 the days, they can earn the total five points. Points are NEVER taken away.
